It's been a while since the last post. So... I guess I will start with “Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year”. I should have realized since we've been home from the NICU and only posted a few times that this would be the norm.
It's been nothing short of an amazing year, stock full of memories, and a journey that we will surely treasure for a lifetime. I wanted to share the latest milestones from our little guy, a few pics, and couple general updates for the Belgard family.
It's interesting how teaching your puppy to roll over and watching your child sit up for the first time are wildly similar, yet completely different. Nonetheless, your Facebook timeline doesn't lie about the amount of social buzz created by both events. I'm just glad that Marley is as equally fascinated with Boone as he is with her. It's a really sweet interaction between the two of them and I'm determined to catch one of those moments on film.
In the meantime, Boone has been a busy man the last few months. Here’s an “I can... ” list now that he’s almost eight months:
- I can sit on my own with just a few tumbles.
- I can make the “da da” sound, but I have no idea what I'm saying.
- I can grab my feet and roll around on my back like a Rollie pollie.
- I can and will eat anything you put on my spoon.
- I can get the ladies to smile by blinking my pretty blue eyes.
- I can be cranky because I'm getting my first tooth.
- I can hear my name and turn in response.
- I can reach for mommy and daddy.
- I can use my hands to sign milk.
- I can laugh and giggle out loud.
We are overwhelmed with love and joy every time our little guy reaches a new milestone.
It's true Boone is growing quicker then I would like; however, I know that he is here for a reason. I see the Lord use his precious little smile to shine His light in peoples’ lives wherever we go. As I reflected on the birth of Jesus over Christmas, I am certain there is a particular purpose for the circumstances surrounding Boone’s entry into the world. I have no doubt that the Lord is using our son for his glory, and I'm certainly honored to be a part of the bigger picture.
As we begin a new year, the Belgards are continuing the task of cultivating discipleship in married couples, young adults, and students in inner city Houston. Also, we are doing some family fitness. I am training for a 5K race in February with my incredible colleagues and of course the fabulous “Coach” Sharon. Casey is training for a half marathon in New Orleans with some of his buddies from Louisiana. Boone will be selling jars of his slobber while cutting his first tooth. And of course Marley will be training with me, which she loves, and also continuing her efforts in becoming Boone’s personal body guard.
Hopefully 2012 will bring new endeavors, continuing efforts, and of course a LOT of fun! Stay tuned for more updates on the Belgards which may or may not be sporadic.

Yes. It's been a month since we've posted.

Yes. We've had a blast hanging out with the coolest kid in Houston.

Yes. The bestest friends in the world come to Houston for an incredible visit.

Yes. Casey took the WOBC students to camp.

Yes. We participated in UNIQUE Student Conference formerly known as SPAMARAMA.

Yes. We housed two churches from Louisiana in our church gym.

Yes. We did VBS in the apartments across the street.

Yes. We went for our first family vacation to good ole Louisiana.

Yes. We were exhausted.

Yes. We are rested

Yes. Mel starts school next week.

Yes. She is dreading it.

Yes. Casey is still hearing impaired and thankful as Boone continues to develop his pipes.

So since that sums up July... Ha! Yeah right! You know we have to give you some details, pics, and fun stories. Looking forward to sharing those highlights with you soon. Probably in a string of posts when there is nothing else interesting happening here in Htown. But for now we're looking forward to a different kind of normal. At least, getting used to a "new" normal will involve a little more scheduling and rest time than the summer. Whew! It's sure been interesting.

Boone Update:

We are going to the doctor next week and are hoping to hear the same news as last time:

- Weight on the low side but healthy.

- Heart is stable/normal with no additional medications.

- Apnea monitor will possibly/hopefully (I can't wait!) be going away by the end of August.

- Overall great baby.

We'll keep you posted about the doctor visit sometime next week when Boone attempts Daddy Day Care on Monday.

Prayer Update:

Please pray with us for Boone's continued health and an easy transition for me into school. Being without him for a longer period of time is not exciting to me, but something I know cannot be avoided. We have a new principal at Clifton Middle School. This is helping me get interested in and excited about going back next week. Plus, I really do love teaching these inner city kids. They truly are amazing little creatures. (Yes! Creatures. Are you kidding me? They're middle schoolers. I'm not really a teacher. I'm just a zoo keeper.)

Also, please pray for our ministry at White Oak Baptist Church as we continue in discipleship/mentorship of WOBC students, young adults, and young married couples. We are excited about the Lord's work in our faith family since we've been here and can't wait to see what he has in store this school year.

Lastly, please pray for Casey as his endeavors increase in ministry this year with new responsibilities/opportunities around Houston. I'll let him elaborate in another post.

There are so many ministry happenings the Lord has blessed us with being a part of this summer. We're so thankful that we've had this time to grow in relationship with Him, understanding His mercies, graces, and love in new ways throughout our journey with Boone. Just in three short months, the Lord has used this kid to touch so many individuals and We are truly blessed to call him son.

We'll be posting again soon to follow up on the events in July. Till then we gear up for school and UNIFY.DISCIPLESHIP on August 27th.

would lead one to believe that this song was being played to express my feelings towards my lovely bride. Though it appears that way and very much could be the case it is not. We chose that song because it reflected our purpose of being married. We are fixed and captivated by our Saviors love. It is clear that He orchestrated our lives together. We were to be molded into co-laborers of the Gospel. Responding to the call He had on our lives. From that afternoon we would embrace an adventure leading us to places we would not have guessed. I am thankful for God and His mercy on my life to provide such a wonderful friend, bride and mother of my son. But most importantly... a sister in Christ Jesus our Lord.

There is much more to share but we will save that for another day. I just want to be clear about my heart and how thankful I am for my wife/best friend for the past 5 years. I love you.

NANA BANANA

Last week, Monday through Thursday, Nana came to Houston to visit. We had such a good time hanging with the Boonster, recovering chairs, visiting with some of our faith family at White Oak, and eating at Pie in the Sky (delicious)! It was great just to spend time with Nana and relax. Here's a few pictures of Nana with the "lil rat". Enjoy!

Thanks for coming to visit with us Nana. We can't wait for you come back. Hopefully we'll be able to get home soon to visit with all our family and friends in Louisiana.

PAST DUE

This one time I had a mess of books that were overdue. So overdue in fact that they cost way to much to admit in cyber space. Nonetheless I accepted my swift kick in the pants from the ill-faced villainous librarian and paid my fine so I could reinstate my library privileges. (I love the library and can't stand to have a momentarily unusable library card.) Well, today someone that's not quite so villainous (Ryann) gave a similar nudge for me to keep up with the blog. She's so right about the blog being the only way to keep up with the goings on of the Belgards and this is my apology to the few followers that are still reading. I'll be more diligent about my posts and try to put something together at least three times a week. I promise. Ryann I love you and can't wait to see you in a couple weeks.

So with that said... On to the events from the last post until now:Monday-Sharon and Kristen Morin came to visit with us and Boone's heart monitor kept going off. Like 26 times in a two hour period. Yikes! Talk about stressful. We called the doctor and scheduled an appointment to see Boone's cardiologist.Tuesday-Today marks Boone's first week home. We went to see Dr. Horenstein and she gave us a great report on Boone's heart: N.O.R.M.A.L.!!! After she said it we made her say it three more times. She's a good sport and Casey told her that sounded awesome because this friendship was costing us a fortune. Insert laughing. She thought that was hilarious too. Leave it to Casey to bring the humor in a situation.

The doc said everything was normal: EKG, echocardiograph, assessment of his vitals etc.

We are thrilled and proud once again of Boone's progress. We went home on a Holter monitor for 24hrs and one less dose of Digoxin. She said one of the reasons his monitor kept going off was because of his medicine and also the perimeters could be lowered so it wouldn't go off so much. Whew! I was really stressing out over the sound of that thing. (I have a strong urge to chunk the monitor off the top of our roof when we finish with it.) All in all, Boone is looking good at 5 lbs 14oz and 19 3/4 in. He will have his heart monitor for at least two months. Since we went to the hospital we figured we drop in on my high risk OBGYN. She loves Boone and we love her.

Dr Ramirez is on the left and Dr Mastrobatista is on the right. Both Docs were working closely with us through everything. They were great and we couldn't have been more blessed to have them on our side. After we got home from the doc's office the Luces brought the best pork chops I've ever had for dinner. FYI: they are getting the little additions to their family this weekend and we are so excited about them. I'll give more on their new family members in another post. To end the night, Casey and I watched The Voice and went to bed.

Wednesday-relaxing day with way less alarms and a few visitors.

Thursday-I went shopping with Boone for me and Casey's 5th anniversary and his first Father's day. Then we had dinner with the Bransons and Justin & Janelle, went to look at a sofa sleeper for the house, and waited for maw maw and poppy to arrive for their weekend visit with Boone.

Friday-Casey and I had lunch, did a little shopping for our anniversary, and I got a hair cut while Casey went mountain biking. Maw Maw Judy and Poppy babysat Boone and of course Marley.

Saturday-Today we had pizza and game day with the Kraffts and Lil Adam. So much fun. Rebekah Villareal brought over lasagna (amazing) and we went to bed early. Whew!

Sunday-Happy Fathers Day Casey and Pops! Even though my Dad is a state away I'm so thankful for him and the little nicknames like: "pooter" and "squirt".

I didn't really get the first name until I was like ten years old. And yes I was totally offended when I realized what it meant. Thanks dad! Anyways. It was a sweet day and me and Boone gave Casey this:

Casey is already an incredible father and I can't wait to add more colorful arrows to our quiver.

SNUGGLEVILLE

This was Boone's first week and weekend home. Wheh! We're tired, but so excited to share with you some of the special moments over the last couple days. We had lots of visitors and some great meals too! Thanks meal train participants. It's been a load off not having to think about getting dinner etc together. On to the pictures: Boone's Nana and Great Maw Maw came to visit this weekend. So, we got our cutest little lion outfit, lion blanket, and little socks and waited for the snuggle time.

We really enjoyed the time with Nana and Maw Maw. Can't wait for Nana to come back in a week. Looking forward to many more rocking sessions, target trips, great meals, and snuggle time. We'll see what adventures this week holds. Stay tuned.

This post is a little late going up. It's actually from last weekend when we were still in the hospital. Wow! So much change in the right direction over the last week.

Since we moved into the NSCU (Neonatal Special Care Unit) we were able to spend some unhindered grandparent time with Boone. It was great and we knew our next step would be home which made it that much more special. So here's a few pictures of Grammy and Poppa with Boone for the first time. Enjoy!

yesterday... today... and forever

We begin with Boone's first visit to meet his Pediatrician. After a productive two days I must give my main little man props... weighing in at 5 pounds 14 ounces with a length of 19' 3/4 he continued to turn heads. Despite entering this world 7.5 weeks early he is on point and remaining healthy. We are thankful once again. Do work Boone... Do work!

As the day continued we had our first lunch out and about as a family. It was a peaceful one. We all left the Medical Center with full tummies. Unfortunately, Boone was the only one suited up for a nap. After a quiet ride back home we continued to nestle into our new routine. Then it struck me... It's moments like these that you pause... look around... and be still. A season of life that makes you say "Wow!". God, why are you so good to me? You are so faithful... You are so true. Then I was reminded of two passages:

Romans 8:28
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."

Philippians 4:6
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."

These two verses resounded in my head the weeks prior to Boone's arrival and with him here safe at home they still ring true. Our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Hebrews 13:8
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever"

With these thoughts I rested and got that nap I was slightly jealous of :)
Soon after waking I was able to enjoy some time behind the lens... .

After a little afternoon fun we welcomed Aunt Trish, Uncle Bradd and cousins McKenna and Ayden. Their home north of Houston has been a place of good times and great conversation offering Mel and I a taste of home away from home. We were thankful and excited to invite them over to see Boone. The hang out time started with Aunt Trish showing the kids the ropes and Ayden quickly jumping in to show us how it is done...

After a few hours of Boone love and conversation we made our way to a local pizza joint to enjoy some of our favorite hot pie. So glad they all could make it out. Looking forward to many summer days poolside and dancing the night away... Wii style!

Well, today was a great day. Looking forward to the weekend when we have some more family arriving to visit with the Boonster. With that said, off to change a diaper... or 2. Adios!

8 weeks ago marks a point in our lives that we will never forget. April 12th, 2011 we headed for a scheduled check up with Boone's cardiologist. Early on in the pregnancy we discovered that Lil'B (Boone) had developed an irregular heartbeat that we assumed after much research was popular amongst newborns and most adults. I still remember the look on the doc's face at that appointment when he swiveled around in his chair and asked... "What are your plans for the rest of the day?" Little did we know Memorial Hermann Heart and Cardiovascular Institute would be next up on the agenda. After being admitted we soon discovered that Boone's heart rate had spiked over 260 bpm and needed immediate attention. So the journey began... and Lord willing, it has ended. I am pleased to inform you that Boone is peacefully resting in his own crib.

As we close this chapter to embrace a new one let me be very clear... I am thankful for the love and care of all family, friends, doctors, nurses, cafe' workers and Ronald McDonald volunteers. But I say it once and I'll say it until death do us part... Jesus Christ is my Rock, my Hope, my Salvation in which I put my trust. He is faithful when I am not. He is gracious when I know I don't deserve it. His word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. He is the sound voice when all around is chaos. He is my God in which I trust. My prayer is this... May I lead, love, and disciple Boone in the ways of my rabbi, my Lord. Loving my family like He has loved the church. I have a responsibility now. One that ways heavy. But I am thankful that I will not stand alone. For He is with me and provides all the means necessary to be sanctified into His image. People have asked " How do you keep a positive attitude through seasons of life such as these?" My response: "A daily disciplined and committed relationship with a savior I call Jesus Christ. Not a relationship based off heightened emotions and touchy feeling and unknowns, but one that is genuine, centered around His truth the Holy Word of God."

Thanks to all for walking through the first chapter with us. Lord willing, many more are upon us.

Change of Scenery

Friday brought on a few changes to scenery for me and Boone.

Scene 1: I went to Clifton Middle School where I teach and began cleaning out my classroom. What a mess! My school is remodeling it's campus this summer and I had to make sure everything was labeled and boxed up so it could be moved back into my classroom for the fall. Ugh... the last thing I wanted to focus on right now. Nevertheless it had to be done. So what did I do...I called in the troops. (This is where I would post a picture of "my troops" aka some of our coolest high school girls from White Oak, my colleague extraordinaire Erin Krafft, the magnificent Morins, and the handsome hubs. That is if I hadn't forgotten to take one with them while they were helping me. Whoops!) It took a while for me to get a handle on what to move out and what to keep etc. The girls boxed and unboxed (sorry girls) lots of things around the room, Erin helped direct me on what I needed to get done, the Morins let me store my junk in their garage aka Josh's room, and Casey helped keep me grounded and focused. I couldn't have done it without you guys. THANKS! I do have one picture. It's what was left of the mural I created on my chalkboard this year.

Ahhh my classroom. I feel like my time there was so short-lived this year. I mean the last time I was there was April. It was an interesting journey from my classroom to a hospital room, but I'm so glad to be done with both for the summer. Thanks to all at Clifton who have helped keep me afloat this year... you know who you are. I couldn't have been away for as long as I was and have the ability to focus on Boone and his situation without you guys and gals pulling my weight back at school. I'm truly grateful for my Clifton family and friends.

Scene 2: After cleaning out my classroom, the Morins and I went to the hospital to see Boone. He had a secret for us...

MOVED

ROOMS!

So here's the deal. When we say it's one day closer to home. That's what we mean. Seriously. I know you're excited and so are we. We've been moved to room 15 of the Cheetah pod on the 8th floor of Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. This floor is still a NICU floor, but it's basically his own room with a door, a couch, and way more cozy. Whoo hoo!

Hopefully the next change of scenery will be from the Cheetah pod to la casa de Belgards!

Family, Food, and Fun

Memorial Day brought a three day weekend (whoo hoo) and also the grandparents to town. Nana and Pop and Maw Maw Judy came to visit with Boone this weekend. That's right we're on the official back burner from now on (wink wink).

We spent a lot of time at the NICU of course, but we also did some fun things around Houston. We visited the George Herbert Bush monument in a city park on Memorial Day. I didn't know he was responsible for quite so many accomplishments in his two terms as President. It was a nice time to reflect on many individuals who have made strides in continuing the liberties we Americans enjoy so freely.

The park had a great view of downtown Houston.

Also, we went to the Aquarium in downtown Houston. It was a lot more interesting than I expected. Eating dinner in front of a 150,000 gallon tank filled with 23 different species of fish, who'd have thought it would be that intriguing for adults.

The food was hit and miss. The meals that me (bayou shrimp pasta), mom (stuffed flounder), and Casey (bacon wrapped shrimp) had were delicious, but Dad (fried seafood platter) said he wasn't that impressed. That's what happens when a Louisianian orders a seafood platter in Houston. However, our desserts were incredible. They even had little fish cookies.

We had a great time with the grandparents this weekend and are looking forward to many more family adventures with them. Hopefully, those times won't include the NICU.

In the meantime, Boone is still gaining weight. He's currently 5lbs 5oz and 18 1/2 in. He's doing a better job of maintaining his body temperature, nursing like a champ, and his heart rate is remaining stable. The nurses are still gah gah over him and want to keep him there longer because they love to cuddle with him, but they're really doing everything they can to get him home as fast as as possible. They're even making him wear two hats and three blankets to aid in him maintaining those good body temperatures he's been getting over the weekend. We're still expecting him to come home in another week or so. Although that's been the consensus for the last couple weeks, this is still what they're saying. There are no other changes. He's as cute as ever and we are chomping at the bit to get him home.

We all have them... Faithful friendships. Despite how long it's been since you've seen each other the conversation typically picks up right where you left off. I'm truly thankful to God for providing healthy relationships in our lives to lean on, laugh with, create awkward moments and so on...

Always a good time with The Booths! Thankful they stopped by to love on Boone. Many vacation memories ahead!

Boone Bear Update

Today when I went to the hospital Boone had his feeding tube again. Ugh! Really Boone? Really?

The nurses said that he needed his tube to be replaced because he wasn't getting enough calories etc. Our goal is to continue to nurse him and give him bottles with breast milk until he's able to gain enough weight and keep his body temperature. The feeding tube will be used to supplement what he doesn't eat with the bottles. Hopefully, with these changes he will beable to accomplish his goals. We're looking forward and not backward. Hopeful that he will make progress again. For now, we wait. Again.

I'm feeling better than the last couple days. Last night we even went to an Astros baseball game with Stacy and Brad Booth. We sat right behind home plate in the "Diamond Club" seating, got to eat some incredible food, and the Astros even won in the 9th inning. It was really fun and took my mind off everything for a while. Thanks Booths for the invite.

I've been a little lazy on the posting over the weekend etc. Sorry about that. It's been an interesting few days. Not interesting because things are taking place that are rare occasions or events, but interesting because they've been rather a blur for me. To explain this may take a few thoughts, but overall I've not been myself. Sure I'm fine in front of people, but when I'm at home with Casey (watching me cry or sleep) and Marley (letting me hold on to her) I feel as if I'm not really myself. The nurses said most moms hit a wall from the emotional highs and intensity of the first two weeks after babies are born and that's probably the cause for this odd feeling I've been experiencing. Maybe so. What I do know is this journey has caused me to sit still in His presence often, and meditate on the things that are true to His word. For example:

God has been and will be glorified through this journey.
He has His gracious and merciful arms around me at all times.
He weeps over His children just as I weep over the distance between me and Boone.
The Lord provides for me spiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally by using those around me (Casey, friends, family, nurses, doctors, our students and young adults, our faith families across three states, and yes... even Marley).

I long for the day that this experience is over, but am thankful for God giving me an opportunity to experience Him and His provision, consistency, and faithfulness. He has never left my side, and I constantly sing praises to His name throughout the day. Here's two of the songs I've been singing over the last two weeks:

Boone is doing about the same. We are trying to pack on the pounds this week so he can go home soon. The extra pounds will help him maintain his body temperature etc. Also, he will be switching to Digoxin this week. This heart medicine has less long term side effects, and will be easier to manage when we are at home. Hopefully, he'll be on this medicine for a short period of time. Maybe 3 months or so. It's getting closer to having him home, but we still have to be patient.

Jim vs Marley... things get a little "Ruff"

It was a typical day in the Belgard home... wake up, breakfast, 10 mile run... upper body workout on Fridays to keep up my physique. After the average morning routine I decided to spice it up. It was time to introduce a new friend to the family...

Meet Ruff...

A multi-purpose pooch in training for his special moments with Boone in a few weeks.

Dinner time easier to digest healthier foods...

After experiencing much quality time together Jim and Ruff became great friends...

Which lead to a game of fetch...

Jim was all smiles... but things turned south.... Including Marley's attitude.

It appeared that Ruff and Jim hit it off so well that they left Marley girl out of all the festivities. But that isn't the only thing. Marley specifically set aside the brand new Penn 2 tennis ball for bright summer days in the park with Boone Bear. We all know the wonderful smell of fresh, newly opened tennis balls. So with that in mind... imagine the emotions Marley was attempting to overcome. It was a memory she wanted with Boone.

It really upset her.

After discovering what seemed to be our first family difference I (AS PROUD DADDY OF THE MONTH) had to address Jim and Ruff. It was tough but it was a lesson learned for all of us.

After talking with the two Ruff made a wise decision to discuss his actions with Marley.As the mediator I witnessed things unfold as best as they could have. I found it a bit hard to interpret but maybe you can help... it went like this

Doctors, Distractions, and Dinner

Today I had my post op visit with Dr. Ramirez. She said I'm doing great! Healing very nicely and looking thinner than last time she saw me. I had to remind her that the last time she saw me I was prego, but none the less it was still great to her. She said I can start driving soon, and do some moderate walking for exercise etc. She also mentioned the only reason why she was allowing these activities is because she knew she couldn't keep me down with "bubba" (that's what she calls Boone) still in the NICU. I just laughed in agreement. Overall, our experience with Dr. Ramirez has been fantastic. I'm so thankful we ended up under her expertise and care.

This is where a cool pic of the two of us standing in her office would go except... I forgot to take the picture. See, I got distracted by the enticing smell of Starbucks coffee and couldn't focus on anything else during the appointment except getting to the tall half-caff white chocolate mocha that was waiting for me after the visit.

Whoops! So here's a picture of "Callie" from Grey's Anatomy (a show about doctors and hospitals). Annnnnnd her real last name is even Ramirez. Close enough for me. The real Dr. Ramirez would say this picture of her looks "years younger and shows off her great hair!" Ha! Maybe next visit I'll be successful in the picture attempt.

Also, today I slept a TON! I mean I thought I'd never wake up. I'm not sure why today was so tiring, but I certainly tried to catch up on the sleep I was apparently missing.

Anyway, I feel refreshed. Casey is at church with our students tonight for Impact. I sure miss those guys and gals (WO:Students shout out). Hopefully, I'll be around sooner than later to show off Lil B.

As far as Boone's progress: Today the docs said that he is maintaining his heart rate and body temperature well. The halter monitor results were normal and they seemed satisfied with normal (so am I). Maybe I already mentioned this last time, but there is a possibility that he will go home without any medication. He's still on one right now, but that's the information the docs offered. Lastly, he's still really young for his suckling skills to have matured full force. So they are saying that he's doing really great, but needs more time to get stronger and increase the longevity of his feeding times. He's a little lazy after feeding on one side. No worries. They said that's totally normal for a baby at 34 weeks who's still supposed to be inside my tummy. This is the time frame that they actually begin suckling in the womb. So we're all good with his progress. Estimated time of departure is looking like 2-3 more weeks. So we'll continue to wait for his super man strength and abilities to mature.

Thanks for the continued prayers, encouraging cards, and invaluable support from our friends, family, and even those we haven't met. Also, thanks to those who have visited this week. It's been great to pass the time with my faith family at White Oak. I hope to be back at church this Sunday. Looking forward to getting back in a routine. Dinner here I come... a girl's got to eat!

Boone Bear Speaks Out

Everything is still looking good. Boone is progressing with his weight (4.14oz) nursing better each day and learning to keep his body temperature. His heart rate is stable, but he's still medicated. Best case scenario is he will go home without any medication (Whoo hoo!) yesterday he had a halter monitor on for 24 hours which they took off this morning. We won't have the results of that analysis until tomorrow. Honestly, I'm not quite sure what results or outcomes they are looking for. So hopefully we will be able to give more info tomorrow.

So far Marley and Jim are having a mutual respect for one another. She doesn't mess with him... he doesn't mess with her. She has licked her lips a few times but overcomes the urge to drag him around like a rag doll.

So this evening I was feeling a little chipper... It was time to challenge Jim and Marley's communication skills and bring their relationship to new heights.

Many of you have heard about the wonderful invention called a Bumbo.

The Bumbo Baby Seat is cleverly designed to support babies and allows the little ones to sit up independently. Knowing that this design is used by lazy parents throughout America we decided to give it a try.

But first... Ole' Jimbo gotta do the dirty work!

Late Night Updates

Boone is maintaining his body temperature, nursing twice a day, and his heart rate is consistently normal. He is doing great! In fact, we even brought a new friend to the hospital today to keep him company. Introducing... Ribbit. That's right it's a frog, but not just your ordinary frog. He's got a nu nu attached to himself, the frog that is. I think the official name of this product is the Wubbanub. It was a gift from cousin Rachel. We weren't sure if he was gonna go for it or not, but as you can see he really likes it. He immediately latched on to it, so we wrapped it in his swaddling before we left. Mommy in one hand, Ribbit in the other, his belly full, and he's ready for nap time. So sweet!

Since he's doing so well, I'm trying to adjust to a not so normal schedule: seeing him at the hospital, getting things done around the house, taking care of paperwork for school, and ending the semester with packing up my classroom etc. Ah summer, could you hurry please!?!

It's been interesting trying to be normal when you're baby is still at the hospital. Really he should still be in my tummy, and I should still be working. Last night was my first night back at our house.

No other way to describe it. I know God has a purpose for this journey we're on. I believe that 100%. Even though I would rather have Boone home sleeping in his crib as I rock in the glider and type this blog post, I can lean on these two things and find comfort:

1. He is safe, loved from a distance, and under the best care as possible right now. I certainly can't monitor his heart rate, lung functionality, or body temperature.

2. God is already using him in a mighty way to touch lives in the NICU (nurses, docs, and parents of other NICU babies) and the lives of our friends and family across at least three states (TX, AL, and LA).

HIS plans often throw us for a loop when we least expect it, but Casey and I are thankful that Boone is growing stronger each day. We are also seeing our friends, family, and faith family grow closer through this journey as they love us and our Lil B in a number of different ways. We are humbled, grateful, and giving glory to our Lord as we continue this journey.

But before they can meet up Mrs. Marley Sue must go through some pre-game warm ups w/Jim. Through recent research Mel and I discovered that it is best for us to use a look-a-like swaddled in Boone's clothing to play out his arrival. So... We did. I must admit... Marley did wonderful. Jim is only missing 1 arm and hair.

Boone continues to show progress. He is feeding from mommy and the bottle twice a day. The remainder of the feedings are done through the tube. He is slowly gaining weight(He gets that from his daddy) and looking beautiful(He gets that from mommy)
Overall we could not ask for anymore from our little man. He is giving every ounce of effort to get healthy. We are proud! The biggest challenge we face is going home. We head back tonight. It is the first night Mel and I have been more than 3miles from Boone. It will be quite the transition but we find comfort in our Lord. He is sovereign.

So... You might ask... What now? Here is our game plan.

6:00am- Mel is up doing her mommy duties providing meals for Boone
7:00am- Preparing for the day
8:30am- Drop Mommy off and visit w/Boone Bear
9:00am- Snack time w/Boone
12:00pm- Mommy and Boone have lunch
1:00pm- Mommy naps
3:00pm- Snack time w/Boone
5:45pm- Daddy on the scene... doing what he does best.
6:00pm- Dinner time w/Boone provided by Mommy served by Daddy.

Whew... That makes me tired just typing it! We better put on our game faces!

Once again... We are so very thankful for the prayers and praise over our family the last 5wks. It is clearly evident that the hand of our Lord is working.

Ladies and gentlemen Boone Bug is impressing all the ladies... Nurse by nurse stopping by to see how cute he is.

As of 12:45pm today his heart rate is stable around 130's with no umbilical or oxygen tubes. His levels are great.

Our current prayer requests are...
1. Boone learns to suck, swallow and breath simultaneously.
2. Mel continues to recover smoothly
3. That we find favor with some housing opportunities on this side of town so Mel can be next to Boone w/out traveling and moving around much
4. As we work w/insurance and such figuring out details w/Mel's job.

Our Lord has been faithful. We thank Him for using His church to show His love. Thanks for all your prayers and support.

Wow! "what a feeling, bein's believing" come on all you 80's fans sing with me now.

I was only one yr old when this song was produced in 1983 for the movie Flashdance. I just can't help but sing that line from the chorus because it seems so fitting for a day like today. No not fitting because I'm dancing around my hospital room in leg warmers because you can clearly see from the picture posted that I'm still in my very flattering hospital gown. I think it brings out the blue in my eyes... don't you agree?

To me it's a fitting chorus to hum today because of the unexpected footsteps I've taken into motherhood this week. These footsteps have truly been exhilarating and completely top the other great moments in my life.

I'm so thankful for many things that have happened this week, but today especially I'm incredibly thankful for Nana (formerly known as my mom) and can't wait to treasure all the things she's been quietly yelling, I mean instilling, in me since I was a little girl. I know that this new chapter in my life will continue to bring forth many memories and experiences that can only be offered because I'm now a part of the mommy squad.

So today as I dance around my hospital room, I mean quietly rest, singing "what a feeling!" I will continue to reflect, respond, and remember the task set before me: We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19 Casey and I would not be able to love Jackson Boone today if we were not first loved by Him through our moms. I will treasure this first Mother's Day dearly and can't wait to love my new son even more each day.

Latest update on Lil' B and Momma B

On a serious note... at 2:00pm the cardiologist partnering with the NICU nurses attempted to get his heart beat to a regular rate. The procedure they used is called Cardioversion. It synchronizes or resets the heart's rhythm. They attempted this procedure 3 times and it did not work as planned.

So we move on....

The next step is treating him directly with Digoxin and Amiodorane through the umbilical cord.

So now we wait...

the good news is when I left him earlier he had a consistent heart rate of 199bpm. We are very thankful.

Overall things are going well. We are extremely impressed with the Memorial Hermann crew. No matter where we step foot... most likely there is a smiling face waiting. This makes our stay here much more enjoyable. We covet your thoughts and prayers.

This is a brief play by play of what I experienced today. I must say... I'm beside myself. He will call me "dad". My prayer is that I will lead him in a fashion that reflects Jesus Christ and reflect the love our families have shown to us.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates a victory by the Mexican Army over the French Army in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Americans like to celebrate this unexpected victory with food, fun, etc. However the Belgards will now be able to celebrate Lil B's birthday!

That's right we'll be parents at 9:30 in the morning. Whoo hoo! No more waiting for medicines to work. At this point, he'll be better off being treated directly rather than through me.

Please pray that everything will go smoothly, and that Lil B's heart rate will convert to a normal rate quickly and with minimal medication.

Response to the Tornadoes

As you read this please be in a mindset of prayer asking the Lord how you can respond to the needs of those impacted by tornadoes earlier this week.

After Sunday's service a family of WOBC approached me with a thought that weighed on their hearts. Dan walked up and said... pack the truck. I was puzzled for a moment then his wife Michelle responded... Dan is headed to Atlanta Saturday. We will provide a truck and we (Anyone) can feel it with needs for Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas. I was like cool... who's truck? Michelle's response... a UHAUL. I was like... whooa. Nice lets do it!

So... here is where we come into play.

GAME PLAN:

The truck will be at WOBC parking lot this Saturday, May 7th. Pending Lil'B I will be there to assist The Widgers in loading the truck. So... the doczards we saw today are still concerned about Lil B's heart rate. It's in the 210's, but no fluid.

So here's the plan:
Stay at home with daily doctor visits to monitor his heart rate and movements, breathing, etc. That also means bed rest. Boo! We will be at home unless they admit us to the hospital again. It's all a waiting game. The goal is still to try and make it to 34 weeks. Then, they will probably do a section. We're at 32 weeks today so only a little longer.

Thanks again for your continued support and encouragement. Please pray for us this week at the following times when we meet with the doctors:

Tuesday - 1:00 pm
Wednesday - 9:00 am and 1:00 pm

Thursday's appointments are on standby pending Tuesday and Wednesday's outcome.

Here is the latest medicine update. Mel and Lil'B have been purged of Amiodarone. We will now begin a beta-blocker called Toprol-XL. A beta-blocker is used for many reasons including chest pains, migraines, lowering blood pressure, etc... in this case we are using it to regulate the irregular heart beat. However there are possible side effects. So we would appreciate your specific prayers in these areas:

-Dizziness

-Drowsiness

-Trouble sleeping

-Low Energy

-Nausea/Throwing up

-Depression

Thank you in advance for your prayers. We will keep you posted on the outcome. The good news is... If Mom and Lil'B handle medicine well we get a weekend pass. :)

As I wrap up the day in Rm 561 I came across this picture. Taken earlier today it reminded of several passages of scripture.

Yes, back in the hospital. However, since we are in a less critical area of the hospital than before, people are very relaxed and nice about things like how many visitors you can have in your room, visiting hours, and people bringing food into your room. So come on down and help us pass the time. They even let me and Casey walk around the hospital for about 20-30 minutes.
All those small details to say this... There has been no change in Lil B's heart rate since we've been here. So, it's possible that they could take him as early as next week, or we could be here till 34 weeks (I'm 31 weeks) and then they would take him. Lots of unanswered questions right now. I'm literally posting the only information we have. It's a waiting game - day by day and hour by hour. But for now a visit to the Cafe Hermann with chubs and hubs will have to serve as a "romantic walk in the park".
Thank you for your continued support, prayers, and encouragement. It's truly a blessing to call you family and friends.
Here's to hoping I can post something different later today when the Docs come in.

Lil' B Update: We went for a chk up today and it did not turn out as expected. Cardiologist said this is the toughest atrial flutter she has monitored.We are being admitted to up the dose of digoxin and monitor Mel and Lil B. Its day to day waiting game. Pls continue prayers.

June 16, 2006...a day I'll never forget. Receiving the blessing to be a prophet, priest, protector and provider all in one day.

As a prophet I would teach and lead the ways taught in the Holy scriptures. Obeying His commandments proving my undivided love for my savior Jesus Christ.

As a priest I would learn to listen and console offering advice that honors our Lord.

As a protector I would learn to fight. Defend anything or anyone that would harm my family. Teaching them the tools they must acquire to survive in this world. Both spiritual and practical.

As a provider I would learn to recognize the needs and fulfill them. Being a good steward with life and using the resources we are blessed with to advance His mission.

...and along the way I have a wonderful co-laborer, best friend and helper. My lovely bride Melissa. She is truly a champ. Proving it once again these past few days. It is a privilege to live this life with her. Serving together for the glory of our Lord. May our marriage reflect Jesus Christ. May my leadership mirror His.

12:15pm - Just finished with the echocardiograph and I'm pleased to say... 200's to 210's for Lil B's heart rate. He's an ace. He's working hard to slow down, but we need a little more time. I'm still feeling good, no major side effects to report.

As church services begin across our nation, I'm sitting in a hospital room. No biggie really... He's here with me just like He's with the man in the jungle. When you are a part of a faith family, especially one that stretches from nation to nation, even when you are not with them physically you know they're still there. Thanks for the support, encouragement, love, and prayers.

Just a few morning glories to share:

5am - blood work and EKG

7am - nurse change and temperature check

8am - breakfast

9am - took second dose of "big gun" medicine. Yey haw!

10am - high-risk OB comes to monitor Lil B and still finds no fluid. She's very pleased, and so are we. Hoping for more reports like this all day. So far I have no symptoms from medication except a lowered heart rate and some drowsy/dizziness.

We are waiting for the fetal heart rate monitor to come in and give us an official heart rate. I'll post as soon as find out.

Friends, Flowers, and a Fresh Shower

This afternoon and evening passed by rather quickly. We had some visits from friends, an unexpected arrangement of flowers (purple and gold of course) and I even got to take a fresh shower. That's right a "real" shower. None of that sponge bath stuff.

Most importantly, Lil B's heart rate was in the 220's tonight when they did the fetal monitoring. Whoo hoo!

At midnight tonight, I'll receive the second dose of the "big gun" medicine so watch out Sunday... Here we come.

We had some visitors...wink wink and more than just the girls who made my nails super fantastic.

11:00am - the high-risk OB came in and did our daily sonogram to check Lil B's vitals (8/8 of course). There was discussion on beginning a new medication today to make sure that Lil B's heart doesn't spike again and that there will be no fluid build up.

11:45am - As the high-risk OB finished up, they were rolling the echocardiograph machine in to look at all the intricacies of Lil B's heart again. The heart rate is still bumping in the 230's and the fluid amount around the heart is staying the same (just a little above normal). There was more discussion on starting a new medicine: Amiodarone or the "big gun" as Dr. Horenstein calls it.

12:15pm - Dr. Horenstein, who was at the zoo with her family today, pops her head in our room and totally takes us by suprise. She wanted to check on us personally and be in on the decision making for the implementation of the "big gun" drug. Wow! I definitely feel well looked after and am thankful that we have, what seems to be, the "right" doctors looking after us.

1:00pm - So after much discussion, all three doctors (my cardiologist, the pedia-cardiologist, and the high-risk OB) have made the decision to start the Amiodarone today and monitor me and Lil B here in CIMU 406 until Monday or Tuesday. They want to watch my body's response to the new medicine and Lil B's heart and fluid rates as well.

1:30pm - Lunch is served. Now we wait... we rest...repeat.

2:00pm - Another EKG for my heart to test vitals before the new medicine is started.

Late last night, while devising an ingenious plan to escape, we were moved from CCU 17 to CIMU 406 (same hall but a different room). I can only infer that one less C means closer to home of course.
So the events of today in our new room will begin here:
2am -The labor and delivery techs came to monitor Lil B's heart rate again mostly because 2am is an opportune time to turn on the lights, wake mommy up, and spread a cold gel on her stomach. At any rate Lil B's heart is still beating irregularly and around the 230s.
3am - zzzzzzz... Lights, EKG, blood work, and vital signs. Check.
7am - After some more sleep, the Labor and Delivery nurse comes for her daily consult. Mostly to inform us that they will be keeping us through the weekend. So, the glimmer of hope standing on one less C is a huge facade. Oh well, I'd rather be monitored closely just in case Lil B has a spike in his heart rate again. Two more days without my bed or Marley. Poor girl. I'm sure she utterly hates sleeping on the couch and in the middle of the bed.

5:30 pm - With the fluid so minuscule and heart rate lowering slightly, we have been able to enjoy some visits with friends, a slower stream of of docs, a few farkle games with mom and dad, and a a little down time. Whew... It's been an interesting day, but I'm looking forward to seeing my bed and Marley soon, soon, soon.

11:15 am - We had our daily sonogram to check Lil B's bios as they are referred to around here (taking breaths, his movements, etc). Lil B got an 8/8. He's a fighter. No fluid around his heart, lungs, or abdomen. Champ.

12:30 pm - Dr Horenstein came to do our daily echocardiograph to measure all the blood flow, heart rate, etc in Lil B's heart. She in all of her four foot, disheveled, heavy accented glory was happy to confirm that she also found no fluid around the heart, lungs, and abdomen. Also, she was excited to report that Lil B's heart was beating between 205-237 which means the second medicine is beginning to work. Yay! Yay! Yay! However, the effects of the second medicine on me are not so great. I'm floating between super jittery and extremely lethargic.

12:45 pm - Dr. Horenstein decided to stop the second medicine and monitor both our heart rates one more day. So it looks like we might be able to come home as early as Saturday or Sunday. The sooner the better.

1:15 pm - Finally, lunch is served and feeling better. Casey even brought me a sweet treat: a fantastic cupcake. That's why he's my fave. Now... we wait. Again. But this time with an end in sight.

9:00 am - ate breakfast and took second dose of digoxin and sotalol. Come on Lil B work with your mommy. Geaux low heart rate, geaux low.
10:00am - Dr Anderson (boss man in the CCU) came in and checked on my progress. He always has at least five residents with him, but today there were just a few.

7:00am - Nurse shift change, but we won't see Amanda till Monday (she's been with me at night since Tuesday). She was fantastic, except for the shots to my backside (reference to earlier pic post).
7:30am - Cardiologist does a checkup on my heart. Everything looks good still. Which means my body is handling the new drug well... No side effects to this point.
7:45am - OBGYN does a checkup on my vitals and monitors if I'm contracting or not. Vitals good. No contractions.
8:12 am - An alarm sounds in the hallway... Craziest sound since I've been here, and there's been a lot of weird sounds/alarms. It was like good mix between a tornado alarm and a fire truck. Strange. Don't know what it belonged to or what it meant. Don't want to ask considering I'm the most lively patient on the full capacity CCU wing. Aka-I'm the healthiest and the youngest by a long shot.

Update: Lil B's heart rate is still 220-230. So, the docs will be adding a second medication. I will get the first dose this evening. Again, we will be waiting for medicines to lower the heart rate for an extended period of time which means we'll be in CCU at the Memorial Herman Heart & Vascular Institute until at least Sunday or Monday. We will continue to post updates as we receive them. Getting restless in the bed, but hope to be home soon. Thanks in advance for the continued prayers.

UPDATE: baby's heart rate is down from 240-260 to 220-230 today. Good sign. No change to small level of fluid around heart, lungs, and abdominal cavity. Waiting for another 24 hrs to see if medicine will lower rate even more.

Casey and I have been serving at White Oak Baptist Church in Houston, TX for the past two years. We L.O.V.E the faith family we serve with and want to say thank you for loving us with open arms. Also, I've been teaching at Clifton Middle School for the past two years. I teach 7th grade to some incredible inner city students who have really enjoyed seeing me "get fat" over the past several months. Which reminds me... we are currently expecting our first child... that's right a bouncing baby boy. Can't you just see Casey beaming with that "that's my boy" daddy smile.

Like father. Like son.

My students love giving lil B a high five as they enter my classroom, and reminding me of how I'm not supposed to pick up things, wear high heels, give homework (because it causes more stress for me to grade of course) or other tidbits of pertinent pregnancy information from the perspective of a seventh grader.

They really are clever.

Needless to say, we're thrilled to bring into the world a future mountain biking sensationalist, piano playing punter extraordinare, or ambassador of the gospel to all nations; but of course an LSU tiger fanatic who's beating to his own rhythm... literally.

Getting ready for school and general life updates.

So I am going to be a teacher in Houston at Clifton Middle School. Can
you believe it I actually got into a school that will feed directly
into our youth group. God is so good!

I haven't seen my classroom here yet, but my mom is bringing all the
things from my classroom in Louisiana up this weekend, including my
grandma, who's is really funny and no is not part of my classroom just
additonal to my moms trip here.

I can't wait to get into my room so I can set everything up. That
really is one of my favorite parts.

In the mean time, we just got back from an incredible week of camp.
Now I know i could say that about every camp I've been to in the last
couple of years, but this one was a bit different. Our young adults,
which I'll have to post a pic of later, worked so hard under casey's
direction and of course the guidance of the holy spirit, to put
together dramas, games, videos, music, and messages. All of it, I mean
ever bit. They truely have talents that the Lord allowed them to use
this week to bring glory to His name. The students who btw were not
excited to go to the camp we had in mind for them, had a fantastic
time. We had a number of different type of decisions such as: coming
to know the Lord for the first time, refocusing the direction they
were headed in, pursuing their spiritual gifts, making war against
themselves and their selfish desires, and recognizing that their life
is being wasted unless they make some serious changes. Whoa... What a
week!

Thanks so much to all our financial and prayer supporters, drivers,
young adults and adults, drivers, and of course Jesus Christ for
making his week possible. I will live LOUDER than before... will you
join me?
